What You Need to Bring: Receipt Requirements
A receipt is normally required to return items at Target. However, the sources indicate that returns and exchanges without a receipt may be limited, and Target reserves the right to deny them in some cases.
You have options if you do not have a paper receipt. If you purchased the item with a Target Circle Card, Target Circle debit card, or Target Circle 360 membership, you can use your Target Wallet as proof of purchase. The Target app allows you to start a return and use your Wallet barcode to complete in-store returns without a paper receipt. For online orders, your purchase history in the app or on Target.com serves as documentation.
For Target brand items specifically, Target states that you can use your Target Wallet if the transaction is in your purchase history.
Items That Cannot Be Returned
The following items are final sale and cannot be returned under any circumstances:
- Gift cards (Target GiftCards, pre-paid cards, specialty gift cards, and Visa, Mastercard, or American Express gift cards)
- Trading cards and trading card accessories, including Pokemon cards and sports cards
- Digital downloads
- Opened or unsealed breast pumps
- Open or defective collectibles, such as special edition Barbie dolls, porcelain dolls, action figures, and die-cast cars
- Personalized items
- Select items sold by Target Plus Partners
Items with Exchange-Only Restrictions
Some opened items cannot receive a refund but are eligible for exchange only:
- Music, movies, video games, and software (exchange for the same title on the same or different gaming platform)
- Airbeds (exchange for a similar item)
Special Return Windows
Target offers extended return periods in specific circumstances:
Target Circle Card holders and Target Circle 360 members: You receive an extra 30 days to return nearly all items purchased with your Target Circle Card. This brings the standard 90-day window to 120 days. Target brand items are not included in this extended benefit and remain at 365 days.
Beauty products: Most beauty items bought in-store or online can be returned even if opened, within 90 days with your receipt, or up to 120 days if purchased with a Target Circle Card.
EBT card purchases: Any item paid for with an EBT card online must be returned within 90 days of the date it was shipped, delivered by a Shipt shopper, or made ready for pickup. This requirement is mandated by SNAP.
Registry items: Most items can be returned within one year of the event date when purchased through a Target registry.
Holiday and limited-time-only collections: Items may have modified return policies. Check the product details page for specifics.
How Refunds Are Issued
Target states that refunds will be issued as part of free returns, but the sources provided do not specify the exact refund method, timeline for processing, or whether refunds go back to the original payment method. Target processes different types of returns, including drive-up, in-store, and mail-in returns, and the method you choose may affect how quickly you see your money.
How to Return Items
In-store returns: Bring your item and receipt to any Target store. Use the Target app to start the return and use your Wallet barcode to complete the transaction without a paper receipt if needed.
Drive-up returns: Use the Target app to schedule a return. Tell Target when you arrive, and you can complete the return without leaving your car. Download the Target app to get started.
Mail-in returns: Target accepts mail-in returns, though the sources do not provide instructions. Contact Target for details on how to initiate a mail-in return.
Large items and furniture: Some large or heavy items, such as furniture and electronics, may be eligible for return pickup. Schedule a pickup through Target’s website or app.
Special Department Returns
Items purchased at Target Optical, Warby Parker, Pharmacy, Starbucks, and Target Tech must be returned or exchanged at those specific departments, not at the regular checkout or customer service desk.
Mobile Phones and Electronics: Additional Fees
Mobile phones have extra restrictions. If you return an unopened phone, there is no restocking charge. However, if you return an opened phone, Target may apply a restocking charge of up to $35, except where prohibited. The restocking charge will be taxed in select states. Mobile phones purchased with a carrier contract may be subject to early termination fees per the carrier contract if returned or exchanged. Contract items and carrier plans must be returned in a Target store with help from a Target Tech Rep.
Opened or Damaged Items
Items that are opened, damaged, or do not have a receipt may be denied a refund or exchange. Beauty products are the main exception, as they can be returned even if opened within 90 days with a receipt. For most other categories, opened items are not eligible for return unless otherwise specified.
Target Plus Partner Returns
Items sold by Target Plus Partners have a shorter 30-day return window compared to items sold directly by Target. These items must be unopened and in new condition. In-store returns without an eligible receipt will be denied. All items sold by Target Plus Partners must be returned to Target either in-store or by mail.
Online Orders Returned In-Store or By Mail
The return window for items ordered on Target.com begins once you receive the items. This applies whether the order was delivered to you, delivered by a Shipt shopper, or picked up in-store. You can return online purchases in-store or by mail using the same return windows that apply to in-store purchases, though some large items may only be returnable by mail or pickup service.
Denied Returns and Target’s Right to Refuse
Target reserves the right to deny returns, refunds, and exchanges in cases of fraud, suspected fraud, or abuse. Returns without a receipt may be limited in some cases. If Target denies your return, ask to speak with a manager to understand the reason and whether an exception can be made.
