Which Coupons Target Accepts
Target accepts two main types of coupons:
- Manufacturer coupons issued by product makers, found in newspapers, printable from the internet, or loaded into your Target Circle account
- Target coupons issued by Target itself, available in-store or in the Target Circle app
Target also accepts valid internet coupons with scannable barcodes that have been added to Target’s coupon database. However, Target does not accept internet coupons for free items with no purchase requirement.
Target does not accept coupons from other retailers, coupons for products not sold at Target, counterfeit coupons, or expired coupons. Additionally, manufacturer coupons cannot be used on mobile phone purchases (except Target Circle manufacturer coupons), and neither Target coupons nor Target Circle offers work on products sold by CVS.
Coupon Stacking Rules at Target
Target’s stacking policy is specific and limits which coupons can be combined on a single item:
- Only one manufacturer coupon (paper or digital) per item
- Only one Target category offer per item
- Only one Target item-level offer per item
This means you can layer one manufacturer coupon with one Target category offer and one Target item-level offer, but you cannot use two manufacturer coupons on the same item or two Target coupons of the same type.
For Buy One Get One Free coupons (BOGO), you cannot combine two BOGO coupons on different items to get both free. Unless the coupon states otherwise, one BOGO coupon requires you to purchase two matching items, with one charged at full price and the second discounted by its full retail price.
When redeeming multiple offers across different categories or using storewide offers, you must meet the purchase requirements for each offer individually. Only one storewide offer per guest can be used per transaction. If you use a percent-off coupon along with an item-level coupon, the percent-off applies to all qualifying items at their full retail price (before the item-level coupon is applied).
Paper Coupons vs. Digital Coupons
Paper manufacturer coupons are valid for in-store purchases only. You must bring them to the register and present them at checkout. They must have a scannable barcode.
Digital coupons in your Target Circle account can be used both in-store and online. Load them to your account before checkout, and they will automatically apply if the item qualifies. Digital coupons also follow the same one-per-item stacking rules as paper coupons.
Paper coupons cannot be printed from a mobile phone, but digital coupons stored in Target Circle on a phone will work in-store. All coupons and Target Circle offers must be presented to the cashier during checkout and have a scannable barcode.
Household Limits and Daily Caps
Target enforces a limit of 4 identical coupons per household, per day (unless otherwise noted on the coupon itself). This means if you find the same manufacturer coupon from multiple newspapers or sources, you can use a maximum of four copies of that coupon in a single day across your household. This limit has been in place since 2012 and applies whether coupons are paper or digital.
Common Reasons Coupons Are Rejected
Understanding why Target refuses coupons at checkout will help you avoid problems:
Coupon Does Not Scan or Is Not in Target’s Database
Manufacturer coupons must scan at the register and match Target’s centralized coupon validation database. If your coupon does not scan or is not registered in that master file, it will be rejected. A coupon may fail to scan if:
- Your printer has low ink and the barcode is illegible
- The coupon is not yet in Target’s system
- The coupon is from an unauthorized source
Product Does Not Match Coupon Description
The item you purchase must match exactly what the coupon specifies: brand, size, quantity, color, and flavor. If you try to use a coupon for a 12-ounce bottle on a 16-ounce bottle, or a coupon for one brand on a different brand, it will be rejected. Always read the coupon fine print carefully and verify the product matches before checkout.
Coupon Is Expired
Target does not accept expired coupons under any circumstance. Check the expiration date before you reach the register.
Coupon Is Copied, Altered, or Counterfeit
Coupons are void if they are copied, scanned (duplicated), altered, transferred, purchased, or sold. Target does not accept counterfeit coupons. Each legitimate coupon has a unique identifier, and duplicating them is illegal. Only use original coupons from authorized sources.
Exceeding the Stacking Limit
If you try to use two manufacturer coupons or two Target coupons of the same type on a single item, the second coupon will be rejected. Remember the rule: one manufacturer coupon, one Target category offer, and one Target item-level offer per item maximum.
Coupon Value Exceeds Item Price
If your coupon value is greater than the purchase price of the item, Target will not give you cash back or apply the overage to other items. The coupon will reduce the item price to zero, and the excess value is lost. For example, a $5 coupon on a $3 item will only save you $3.
Reoccurring Disruptive Behavior
Target reserves the right to refuse or limit coupon use if your shopping behavior becomes disruptive or the items appear not to be for personal use or gifting. This is uncommon for regular shoppers but may apply if your purchases look more commercial than personal.
Coupon from Another Retailer
Target does not accept coupons issued by other stores. CVS coupons, Ulta coupons, Walmart coupons, Aldi coupons, and any other retailer’s coupons will be rejected. Use only coupons issued by manufacturers or by Target itself.
Coupons and Returns
When you return an item purchased with a coupon, your Target return policy credit will not include the coupon discount or promotional offer that was applied to the original purchase. If you return an item with a coupon attached, you forfeit that savings.
Target also reserves the right to decline the return of items purchased with manufacturer coupons or rebates entirely. Single-use offers will be automatically reissued to your account if all items that had the offer applied were returned, cancelled, or voided.
What to Do at Checkout
To avoid rejection:
- Present all coupons to the cashier before payment
- Ensure each coupon has a clear, scannable barcode
- Verify the product matches the coupon description exactly
- Check expiration dates
- Know your household’s coupon count for that day
- Confirm you are not exceeding the one-per-item stacking limit
- Use only manufacturer and Target coupons, never retailer coupons from elsewhere
Coupons cannot be applied to previous purchases or added after checkout. Load digital coupons to your Target Circle account before you shop, and bring paper coupons to the register at the time of purchase.
Important Tax Rules
Sales tax is calculated on the full value of an item before a manufacturer coupon is applied. Target coupons reduce the taxable amount of items to which they apply (unless prohibited by law). This means you may pay slightly more in tax than you expect when using manufacturer coupons.
For questions about specific coupons or your account, contact Target customer service through the Target.com help page. When you call or message, have your coupon barcode and item details ready to reference.
