What the Health Ambassador Program Offers
Under this pilot, participating pharmacists receive dedicated time away from their usual pharmacy duties to meet one on one with customers. These Health Ambassadors provide personalized coaching on nutrition, physical activity, sleep and stress management. They help shoppers navigate the full range of health services Walmart offers, including immunizations, screenings, vision care, medication assistance, virtual care and pharmacy delivery.
The program also bridges Walmart’s grocery and health services. Health Ambassadors can recommend healthier food options or create customized grocery lists aligned with your health goals. This integrated approach means you can address nutrition, medication and wellness in one convenient location rather than juggling multiple appointments and providers.
Which Areas Will Get Health Ambassadors First

Walmart selected five communities for this initial pilot: Lexington, Tennessee; Caro, Michigan; Franklin, Virginia; Fort Scott, Kansas; and Searcy, Arkansas. The company deliberately chose rural locations because about 4,000 Walmart stores operate in medically underserved areas. With roughly 90 percent of Americans living within 10 miles of a Walmart or Sam’s Club, the retailer sees an opportunity to fill critical health care gaps in communities where access to doctors and specialists is limited.
Focus Areas for Initial Rollout
The pilot program concentrates on three major health challenges: diabetes management, weight loss support and maternal health. Customers managing diabetes or working toward weight loss can receive coordinated help with nutrition planning, physical activity guidance, health monitoring and medication management. Pregnant women and new mothers can access nutrition resources, food recommendations, self care products and preventive services through their Health Ambassador.
How to Access This Service
Health Ambassadors will be available for both scheduled appointments and walk in coaching sessions. You can discuss over the counter products with them and receive guidance on appropriate next steps for additional services. The Health Ambassador serves as your main point of contact, eliminating the need to independently navigate various Walmart services or figure out which resources match your needs.
These pharmacists also dedicate time to community outreach, hosting educational programs, attending local events and partnering with organizations that serve rural residents. This means Health Ambassadors become integrated into their communities rather than staying isolated in pharmacy spaces.
Why Walmart Is Making This Move

Walmart previously operated standalone Health centers and virtual primary care services but closed them in 2024 after determining those models were not financially sustainable. The company has maintained its pharmacies and vision centers while exploring new ways to deliver health services through its existing store network and digital platforms. The Health Ambassador pilot represents this evolved strategy.
Dr. Emily Aaronson, Chief Medical Officer for Walmart U.S., explained that the company recognizes health does not happen in a single appointment with one provider. Customers already trust Walmart pharmacists and turn to the retailer for affordable food and everyday essentials, making the stores a natural hub for wellness conversations and resource navigation.
What This Means for Shoppers
If you live in a pilot community, this program offers expanded access to professional health guidance without extra medical appointments or costs. You gain a trusted resource who understands both your health goals and the services available through your local Walmart. For rural shoppers who may struggle to find specialists or coordinate multiple providers, having a dedicated Health Ambassador could simplify wellness management.
The six month pilot will provide Walmart with data about which services rural customers use most, where additional support gaps exist and whether this model could expand to more locations. The company will evaluate program success and determine how prominently Health Ambassadors should feature in its broader health care strategy going forward.
Walmart continues reshaping its health offerings to better serve communities and customers. Whether you are managing a chronic condition, planning for pregnancy or simply seeking to improve your overall wellness, this emerging program demonstrates the retailer’s commitment to making health resources more accessible and convenient for shoppers nationwide.
