SNAP EBT Acceptance and Eligible Items
Amazon accepts SNAP EBT cards for eligible grocery items on Amazon.com, Amazon Fresh, and Whole Foods Market on Amazon. Item eligibility follows the same USDA guidelines that apply to SNAP purchases in physical stores. This means items must be food for home consumption, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, grains, and snacks, but excludes hot foods, prepared meals, vitamins, household items, and non-food products.
Starting January 1, 2026, SNAP EBT product eligibility varies by state due to new state-specific rules. Some states, including Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Utah, and West Virginia, now restrict purchases of beverages with high sugar content, candies, and prepared desserts using SNAP EBT. More states are expected to implement similar restrictions in the coming weeks and months. To find which items qualify in your state, look for the “SNAP EBT eligible” label on product pages or check Amazon’s EBT eligibility page and the USDA website.
Items must be sold and shipped by Amazon.com or Amazon Fresh. Third-party sellers are not eligible for SNAP EBT payments on Amazon.com, though you can mix eligible and ineligible items in one order by using a second payment method such as a gift card, credit card, or debit card for non-eligible items.
Cash EBT Acceptance
Customers in 22 states plus the District of Columbia can use Cash EBT (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, also known as TANF) to purchase items from most categories on Amazon.com. Cash EBT has broader eligibility than SNAP and can be used for electronics, toys, beauty and personal care, home and kitchen items, and many other products. Like SNAP, you can register one EBT card to your Amazon account, and Cash EBT can be used for purchases from most categories including items sold by third-party sellers.
Registration and How to Pay
To use your EBT card on Amazon, visit the SNAP EBT page on Amazon.com and follow the on-screen instructions. If you are not already an Amazon customer, you will need to create an account. Add your SNAP EBT card by entering your card information. You may register one EBT card to your Amazon account.
At checkout, select your EBT card as the payment method. You will be prompted to enter your card PIN to complete the purchase. Look for items labeled “SNAP EBT eligible” before adding them to your cart. Your SNAP EBT card cannot be used to pay for shipping fees, delivery fees, or tips, so you will need to provide an alternate form of payment for those charges.
Delivery Fees and Free Shipping Options
Once a SNAP EBT card is registered, you receive free delivery on Amazon Fresh orders of $100 or more. For orders between $50 and $100, a service fee of $6.95 applies for two-hour delivery windows. Orders under $50 incur a $9.95 service fee. Free pickup from Amazon Fresh is available across the U.S. for SNAP EBT customers on orders of any size.
For Whole Foods Market grocery delivery, SNAP EBT customers are charged the same service fee as non-Prime members, which ranges from $9.95 to $13.95. Grocery pickup from Whole Foods is free on orders of any size for SNAP EBT customers.
SNAP EBT customers can also get a low-cost Amazon coupon policy subscription for grocery delivery. The subscription costs $4.99 per month for unlimited Amazon Fresh delivery on orders over $35, compared to the regular $9.99 per month for Prime members. For regular delivery orders on Amazon.com without a subscription, orders under $100 include a service fee ranging from $6.95 to $9.95. When shopping on Amazon.com for grocery staples with SNAP EBT, there is no minimum spend required to receive free delivery for eligible items.
Benefits of Registering Your SNAP EBT Card
Registering your SNAP EBT card on Amazon unlocks several benefits. You gain access to Amazon Fresh and free delivery on orders of $100 or more without needing a Prime membership. The discounted Amazon Grocery Subscription for $4.99 per month offers free unlimited delivery on orders over $35 from Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, and other local grocery retailers.
If you receive SNAP, Medicaid, or other qualifying government assistance, you may also be eligible for Prime Access, which provides all Prime benefits at 50% of the regular membership cost. This includes fast free delivery, Prime Video access, and exclusive deals. However, your EBT card itself cannot be used to pay for Prime membership. Check the Amazon senior discount page for other discounts that may apply to your situation.
Important Limitations and What You Cannot Buy
Your SNAP EBT card cannot be used to purchase hot or prepared foods, vitamins and supplements, household cleaning supplies, personal care items like toiletries, pet food, alcohol, tobacco, or non-food items. These restrictions match USDA SNAP guidelines and are enforced both in physical stores and on Amazon.
You also cannot use your EBT card to pay for Prime membership, shipping fees, delivery fees, or tips. Shipping and delivery fees must be paid with another form of payment such as a credit card, debit card, or gift card. If your state is not among the 22 states plus D.C. that accept Cash EBT, you can only use SNAP EBT for eligible grocery items, not for electronics, clothing, or other retail products.
Shipping restrictions apply based on state law. For details about EBT delivery restrictions in your state, visit Amazon’s EBT Frequently Asked Questions page. Compare Amazon’s EBT policy with Target EBT policy and Walmart EBT policy to understand your options at other major retailers.
