Using Your EBT Card In Target Stores
Target accepts SNAP EBT cards at all checkout options in physical stores, including regular checkout lanes and self-checkout kiosks. After you swipe your EBT card at any checkout, you will see a prompt asking you to select which account you want to use: EBT cash or SNAP EBT balance. Choose SNAP EBT balance to pay for eligible items.
At self-checkout, scan your SNAP-eligible items, tap Finish and Pay, select Pay with EBT, swipe your card, and enter your PIN. The kiosk will deduct the cost of eligible items from your SNAP balance. For any non-eligible items remaining in your cart, you will need to use a different payment method, such as a credit card, debit card, or cash. Ask the self-checkout attendant for help if you have trouble with the process.
Using EBT Online at Target
Target accepts SNAP EBT for online orders through three fulfillment methods: order pickup, same-day delivery, and standard shipping.
Order Pickup: There is no minimum purchase requirement. Add your EBT card to your Target account, build your cart with SNAP-eligible items, and select your payment method at checkout. You can adjust the amount applied to your EBT card before confirming your order. You will need to enter your EBT PIN to complete the purchase.
Same-Day Delivery: There is no minimum purchase requirement, but orders under $35 will incur a $7 delivery fee. You must pay this fee with a secondary payment method such as a credit card, debit card, or gift card. If you add items by texting your shopper or through special instructions after placing your order, you can select Charge more to EBT card on your order details to apply additional SNAP-eligible items to your EBT balance. Any tips for your Shipt shopper and the weight difference on price-per-pound items must also be paid with a secondary payment method.
Shipping: Orders under $35 with add-on items will have a $5.99 shipping fee applied. You cannot pay shipping fees with your EBT card, so you must provide a secondary payment method. Gift cards can be used for shipping and delivery fees if you do not have a credit or debit card.
To add your EBT card to your Target account for online shopping, sign into your Target account on Target.com or the Target app. Select your account settings, then Payments or Payment cards. Select Add payment card, choose EBT card as the card type, and enter your card number. You can optionally set it as your default payment method. You will also need to add a backup payment method for fees, delivery, tips, and non-SNAP items.
Target does not accept EBT cash for online orders at this time. If you do not have a credit or debit card, you can use a Target gift card as your secondary payment method.
Which Items Are SNAP-Eligible at Target
Target follows federal SNAP eligibility rules set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. You can purchase any item on the official USDA SNAP eligible food items list with your EBT card at Target. Examples include fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products and eggs, bread, cereals, pasta, grains, snack foods like pretzels and nuts, and non-alcoholic beverages such as orange juice and bottled water. Dried herbs and herb growing kits, including mushroom growing kits, are also eligible.
When shopping online at Target, items labeled SNAP EBT eligible will display that designation below the product reviews. Target also offers a grocery deals category on its website to help you maximize your SNAP benefits.
What Is NOT SNAP-Eligible at Target
You cannot use your SNAP EBT card to purchase hot or prepared foods, including hot coffee, soup, hot pizza, or items from the Starbucks location inside Target stores. Vitamins, medicines, and any product with a Supplement Facts label are not eligible. Alcohol, tobacco, and non-food items such as clothing, electronics, toys, and household goods cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits. Items that are not SNAP-eligible, Target Plus items, the difference in cost on higher-priced substitutions, delivery fees, shipping fees, and tips all require a secondary form of payment.
Returns and Refunds With EBT
Most items purchased with an EBT card in-store or online can be returned within 90 days in accordance with Target’s standard return policy. If you return an item that was originally paid for with your EBT card, the refund will be credited back to your EBT card. For online purchases, you will receive an email notification showing the amount refunded to your EBT card and your new SNAP EBT balance.
Does Target Accept EBT Cash?
Target accepts EBT cash (also called TANF or cash assistance) at physical store locations. You can use your EBT cash card at checkout just as you would use a debit card. However, Target does not currently accept EBT cash online. If you want to place an online order but do not have a credit or debit card, you can use a Target gift card as your payment method.
Target Account Requirements
You must have a free Target account to place an online order using your EBT card. You can create an account on Target.com or through the Target app. A Target account is required for all online shopping methods, including order pickup, same-day delivery, and shipping.
EBT and Target Services
You cannot use your EBT card to purchase Shipt memberships. The Starbucks location inside Target stores does not accept EBT cards, even for SNAP-eligible food items. Before shopping at your local Target with WIC benefits, call ahead to confirm that location accepts WIC cards, as not all Target stores participate in the WIC program.
Protecting Your EBT Card at Target
When shopping at Target or any retailer, protect your EBT card and PIN. Before swiping your card at any reader, gently tug the card reader to check for illegal skimming devices that thieves use to steal card information. Never share your PIN with anyone, including Target employees. Change your PIN every month before your monthly deposit lands, and check your EBT balance frequently for suspicious activity. Report a lost or stolen card to your state’s EBT customer service line immediately.
Comparing EBT Policies at Other Retailers
Target’s EBT policy is similar to other major grocers. If you shop at multiple stores, check the Walmart EBT policy to compare online ordering options and fees. Many retailers that accept SNAP benefits follow the same USDA eligibility rules, but payment methods and online ordering requirements may differ.
