Gift Card Expiration and Fees
According to Home Depot’s official policy, gift card value never expires. There are no fees charged for owning or using a Home Depot gift card, whether you purchased it yourself or received it as a gift. This applies to both physical plastic cards and eGift Cards. You can reload your card with additional funds at any Home Depot store or online as many times as you wish, and those added funds are also never-expiring with no added fees.
Home Depot gift cards can only be used at Home Depot stores in the U.S. or on homedepot.com. They cannot be used to purchase other prepaid cards or specialty gift cards from other retailers. If you hold a Home Depot gift card, you also have access to benefits like the Home Depot military discount and the Home Depot senior discount when you present the required credentials at checkout.
Checking Your Balance
You have two ways to check how much money remains on your Home Depot gift card. First, you can visit any Home Depot store and ask a cashier to check the balance for you on the spot, no purchase required. Second, you can check your balance online at www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards by logging into your Home Depot account. Both methods are free and take only a few moments.
If you received an eGift Card via email, you will have received a gift card number and PIN. Use those same credentials when checking your balance online or provide them to a cashier in store. For balance checks, you do not need to bring the physical card to a store; a cashier can look up your balance using just the card number if you have it memorized or written down.
Cash Refunds and Lost Card Replacement
Home Depot does not offer cash refunds for unused gift card balances. This is a hard rule with no exceptions listed in the company’s official policy. If you have money left on your card, you must spend it at Home Depot or lose it.
If your Home Depot gift card is lost or stolen, the company does not offer replacement cards or balance transfers. The sources do not address whether the card can be canceled to prevent unauthorized use. For this reason, treat your gift card number and PIN the same way you would treat a credit card number, and buy or purchase them only from Home Depot stores or homedepot.com to reduce fraud risk. The Home Depot explicitly warns customers not to purchase, sell, or check balances on gift cards through online marketplaces outside of Home Depot’s official channels, as scammers frequently target gift card transactions.
Using Your Gift Card In Store and Online
When shopping in a Home Depot store, simply present your physical gift card at checkout and the cashier will scan or swipe it to apply the balance to your purchase. You can also reload your card in store if you want to add more funds.
To use your gift card online at homedepot.com, you must first have a valid Home Depot account and be signed in. Add items to your cart, proceed to checkout, and under the Payment tab, select “apply a gift card.” Enter your card number and PIN to complete the purchase. You cannot use a Home Depot gift card to buy other brand gift cards online or in store, and non-Home Depot gift cards, such as Visa or American Express gift cards, cannot be redeemed on homedepot.com (though they can be used in physical stores).
If you make a purchase using a gift card and later need to return the item, you may be eligible for a refund. For details on how returns are processed and what refund method you will receive, see the Home Depot return policy or speak with a store associate about Home Depot price adjustment policy if the price drops shortly after your purchase.
Gift Card Purchase and Reload Options
You can purchase Home Depot gift cards in store or online. In store, look for the display near the checkout area with a variety of card designs for different occasions, such as weddings, birthdays, holidays, new home purchases, and thank you gifts. Online purchases are also available at homedepot.com.
Home Depot accepts VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, The Home Depot Pro Xtra Credit Card, and the Home Depot Commercial Card for gift card purchases. Once you own a gift card, you can add funds to it at any Home Depot store or online without limit.
Gift cards come in plastic or eGift Card formats. eGift Cards are sent via email and can be used immediately if the recipient has a Home Depot account. Plastic cards may take a few days to arrive if ordered online.
How Home Depot Compares to Other Retailers
Home Depot’s no-expiration policy matches competitors like Lowe’s, but differs from some other major retailers. The Best Buy gift card policy also has no expiration, and Amazon gift card policy similarly does not expire. However, Target gift card policy also offers no expiration. Home Depot’s refusal to issue cash refunds or replace lost cards is common across the retail industry and is standard practice at most major chains.
