The Two Time Windows: 90 Days for IKEA Family, 14 Days for Others
IKEA divides price adjustment eligibility into two groups based on membership status. If you used your IKEA Family card when you made the original purchase, you qualify for a 90-day window to request a price adjustment. If you paid without an IKEA Family card, the window is 14 days from the purchase date.
The 90-day window is the primary benefit of IKEA Family membership for price adjustments. IKEA Family members must have used their member number at checkout to qualify; adding the member number after purchase does not extend your eligibility. The 14-day option is available to anyone, regardless of membership status, and does not require any special registration or card at the time of purchase.
Both windows are measured from the original purchase date. There is no grace period or extension if you miss the deadline by a day or a week. Count carefully from your receipt or order confirmation to know your exact cutoff date.
What You Must Do to Request a Price Adjustment
To request a price adjustment, you must contact IKEA directly and provide proof of purchase. IKEA accepts either your original receipt or your online order number as proof. Without one of these, IKEA will not process your request, even if you remember the purchase date or product name.
How you request the adjustment depends on where you bought the item:
- In-store purchases: Visit the IKEA store with your receipt and ask for a price adjustment at the customer service desk. The adjustment will be processed on the spot if you qualify.
- Online purchases: Contact IKEA customer service by chat, phone at 1-888-888-4532, or online messaging. Do not go to a store; online price adjustments are handled by customer service only.
Have your order number and the current sale price ready when you call or chat. Be prepared to confirm the exact product name, product number, and the price you paid. If you used an IKEA price match or any other promotion on the original purchase, mention that upfront, as it may affect eligibility.
Critical Eligibility Requirements and Exclusions
Not every price drop qualifies for a refund. IKEA lists four strict conditions that must all be met:
- You must have proof of purchase (receipt or order number).
- The purchase must be within the last 90 days (IKEA Family) or 14 days (others).
- The new, lower price must be current and ongoing at the time you request the adjustment. Past sales and expired promotions do not qualify.
- The promotion or event under which the new price is offered must apply to your original purchase. Some promotions, like kitchen or bathroom events, have additional conditions that your purchase must meet.
IKEA explicitly does not offer price adjustments on several product categories and conditions:
- Items in the As-Is section (clearance, display, gently used, or discontinued items).
- Services.
- Food items and consumables.
- Custom countertops and wall panels.
- Items that were already purchased using other offers or discounts. Price adjustments cannot be combined with existing discounts.
- Items purchased with an IKEA coupon policy or reward that is being applied. Check the specific terms and conditions of limited-time or limited-quantity promotions, as some may be excluded from price adjustments altogether.
If you bought an item using IKEA Family rewards points, a price adjustment may still be possible, but check the promotion’s terms first. If you return the original item later, those points will be forfeited automatically within 24 to 48 hours.
When the New Price Must Be Active
One of the most misunderstood rules is that the new, lower price must be current and ongoing at the time you request the adjustment. This means you cannot request a price adjustment on a past sale that has already ended. If a promotion ran last week and ended yesterday, you do not qualify, even if you are within the 90 or 14-day window.
You must request the adjustment during the promotional sale period when the reduced price is still in effect. As soon as the sale ends and the price returns to normal, IKEA will no longer honor a price adjustment request for that product. This is a hard rule with no exceptions.
To avoid missing the deadline, check the current sale price on the IKEA website or call 1-888-888-4532 to confirm the promotion is still active before you submit your request. If you wait until after the sale ends, your request will be denied.
How You Receive the Refund
If your price adjustment request is approved, the refund is issued to your original payment method. If you paid by credit card, debit card, or another card, the credit goes back to that card. If you paid with cash, ask about the refund process at the time of your request, as IKEA may issue a store credit card or other method for cash refunds.
If your original purchase was made with an IKEA gift card, the refund will be issued as store credit to an IKEA Digital Refund Card. You cannot receive cash back on a gift card purchase; the refund stays within the IKEA ecosystem.
How IKEA Compares to Other Retailers
IKEA’s price adjustment policy is stricter than some competitors. Home Depot price adjustment policy typically allows price matching for up to 30 days and is easier to combine with sales. Lowe’s price adjustment policy also offers a 30-day window without the same requirement that the sale must still be active. Best Buy’s Best Buy price adjustment policy allows adjustments within 15 days for most items. IKEA’s 14-day standard window is competitive, but the 90-day IKEA Family benefit is a genuine advantage if you use the card.
