IKEA Return Policy 2026: Time Limits, Receipts, and Refund Methods

Policy details verified on August 17, 2026. Store policies can change - check the retailer’s site before you rely on them.

Short answer

IKEA offers a 365-day return window for unopened products and a 180-day window for opened items, both requiring proof of purchase for a full refund. Refunds are issued to your original payment method, and you can return items at any IKEA store or arrange mail or pickup for online orders.

Return Time Limits by Product Type

IKEA’s return window depends on whether the product has been opened. Unopened items in original condition can be returned within 365 days of purchase. Opened products have a shorter window of 180 days. Both timeframes require proof of purchase to qualify for a full refund.

Mattresses follow a different rule: you may exchange a mattress for another mattress one time within 90 days of purchase. This is an exchange only, not a return for refund.

Some products cannot be returned at all. IKEA does not accept returns on plants, cut fabric, custom countertops, or items marked as “as-is.” Items that have been modified, are dirty, stained, or damaged beyond normal wear also cannot be returned.

What Requires Proof of Purchase

You must bring a receipt and a valid government-issued photo ID to make any return or exchange in-store. IKEA retains information from your ID in a company-wide database for return authorization only.

If you cannot locate your receipt, IKEA may be able to look up the transaction if you made the purchase by card or digital payment. To retrieve a lost receipt, bring the store location, date of purchase, transaction amount, and the last four digits of the card used. If the card is present at the time of lookup, your refund will go to that original payment method.

Receipt information is also stored in your IKEA Family account if you provided your member number at checkout. Log in to view your complete purchase history and retrieve proof of purchase details.

How Refunds Are Issued

Refunds are made in the same form of payment you used for the original purchase. If you paid by credit card, debit card, or digital payment method, the refund returns to that same account. Only the net purchase price shown on your receipt will be refunded.

If you lost your receipt but can have IKEA look it up with your card present, you can request the refund go to a refund card instead of the original payment method. However, without the card present during the lookup, a refund card is your option.

Important: If you received a promotional item as part of your original transaction and do not return that promotional item, IKEA will deduct its value from your refund amount.

Where and How to Return Items

For in-store purchases, go to your local IKEA and enter through the Exchanges & Returns entrance. Follow signage to the Exchanges & Returns desk and sign up to join the line. Staff will process your return with your receipt, photo ID, and the merchandise.

For online purchases, you can also return items at any IKEA store using the same Exchanges & Returns entrance and desk. You will need your online order confirmation (or receipt if printed), photo ID, and the card used for purchase.

For pickup of returned items from your home after an online purchase, contact the IKEA US Customer Support Center at 1-888-888-4532 to schedule. Removal and pickup services vary by market. If available in your area, bring the product to your covered porch, garage, or doorstep.

For small items, you can return them via FedEx by contacting Customer Support. IKEA will provide a shipping label, and you can drop off your package at any of over 50,000 FedEx locations nationwide.

Returns are not accepted at IKEA Planning Studio locations or IKEA Pick Up Point locations. Return your items to a full-service IKEA store instead.

Damaged and Incomplete Orders

If your order arrived incomplete, contained damaged products, or did not arrive at all, contact IKEA immediately. For single damaged parts, IKEA may ship replacement parts from a store. Bring the damaged product or part and your order confirmation or receipt to your nearest IKEA store for the quickest resolution. If you cannot visit in person, call the IKEA US Customer Support Center at 1-888-888-4532.

How IKEA Compares to Other Retailers

IKEA’s 365-day window for unopened items is longer than many furniture retailers. Lowe’s return policy and Home Depot return policy offer 90 days for most items, making IKEA significantly more generous on unopened merchandise. However, IKEA’s 180-day limit on opened products is stricter than some competitors, so condition at return matters more here.
