In-Store Returns: 30-Day Window with Receipt
If you bought an item in a Marshalls store and have your register receipt, you have 30 days from the date of purchase to return it for a refund in the original form of tender. This means the refund goes back to the card, check, or cash method you used to pay. Keep your receipt, as it is the fastest way to process your return and guarantees the refund amount.
Bring the merchandise in its original condition, unworn and unwashed, along with the receipt to any Marshalls store. Your signature may be required at the register. If the item is in used, worn, or unsellable condition, Marshalls will refuse the return regardless of whether you have a receipt. Swimwear and intimate apparel must have the hygienic ticket properly attached to the merchandise.
If you purchased an item using a check, note that a special 10-day period applies for a cash refund on check purchases. After 10 days, a check purchase can still be returned within 30 days, but you will receive merchandise credit instead of a refund to your original form of tender.
Returns Without a Receipt or After 30 Days
Losing your receipt changes the refund outcome. Returns with a receipt over 30 days, with a gift receipt, or without a receipt will receive merchandise credit only, not a refund to your original payment method. Merchandise credit is subject to the terms and conditions printed on it and may include restrictions on transfers.
For returns without a receipt, Marshalls requires a valid government-issued photo ID, your name, address, and signature. Any name printed on the merchandise credit must match the name on the photo ID presented, or you cannot use the credit. The merchandise credit will be issued at the item’s current selling price, which may be lower than what you originally paid if the item has been marked down since your purchase.
One workaround exists if you paid by credit or debit card: ask an associate to look up your transaction in the system. Some stores can restore the original purchase amount and process the refund to your card instead of store credit. This is associate discretion and not guaranteed at every location, so call ahead if returning a high-value item without a receipt.
Gift receipts are handled differently. If you received an item as a gift and have the gift receipt, you can return or exchange it without a government ID. The credit is issued at the gift receipt price, protecting you from markdowns that occurred after purchase.
Online Returns: 40-Day Window and Mail Costs
Items purchased at marshalls.com have a 40-day return window from your order date. Before you return anything, check the shipping confirmation email and product details for final-sale items or additional return restrictions, as some items cannot be returned under any circumstances.
You have two options for returning an online purchase. First, bring it to any Marshalls store near you with either your printed shipping confirmation email, your mobile shipping confirmation, or the barcode and order number from your online order details. This is free and you receive an immediate refund or store credit on the spot. Your signature is required for in-store returns of online orders.
Second, mail your return back to the Marshalls warehouse. Initiate the return through your account at marshalls.com, select your shipping carrier, and print the prepaid label. Drop the package at the carrier location. However, Marshalls deducts a $11.99 return shipping and handling fee from your refund or store credit. Include the plastic packaging your items arrived in, and consolidate items into a single shipment because you will be charged $11.99 for each separate return package. Returns that arrive at the warehouse more than 40 days after your order date will receive merchandise credit instead of a refund.
If you paid by credit card, mail returns are refunded to your original form of payment minus the $11.99 fee within 10 to 14 business days after the warehouse receives your return. Purchases made entirely or partly with a Marshalls Gift Card receive merchandise credit when returned. PayPal purchases returned by mail receive charge credit minus the $11.99 fee.
Important: exchanges are not available for online orders by mail. If you need a different size or replacement item, you must return to a Marshalls store in person.
Items That Cannot Be Returned
Marshalls maintains a list of final-sale and restricted items that cannot be returned under any circumstances. Items marked as “Final Sale” or “No Returns” on the price tag cannot be returned, with no manager override available. The following items are not eligible for in-store returns:
- Items over $1,000
- Handbags over $499.99
- Footwear over $499.99
- Long occasion gowns
- Luggage sets
Beauty items that have been opened or tampered with cannot be returned. Swimwear and intimate apparel must have the hygienic ticket intact and attached, or the original tag still in place. Gift cards are not eligible for returns.
Items that are used, worn, or in unsellable condition will not be accepted for refund, merchandise credit, or exchange, regardless of whether you have a receipt or how many days have passed. Marshalls uses refund verification systems to track returns and help administer its loss prevention program. Returns may be limited or declined based on these systems.
Important Restrictions and Special Cases
Items purchased at a Marshalls store can only be returned to a Marshalls store. They cannot be returned to TJ Maxx or any other sister brands. Similarly, items purchased at marshalls.com can only be returned to a Marshalls store or the Marshalls online warehouse. Merchandise bought in store cannot be returned online.
Oversized items based on size or weight of the product may have a shipping surcharge cost in addition to standard delivery and processing charges. Shipping and handling costs and shipping surcharges are non-refundable. Return shipping and handling fees for online orders are also non-refundable unless the merchandise is defective.
For online purchases, certain items may include an additional security tag that must remain attached and intact for the return to be accepted. Once you decide to keep the item, you can remove the security tag at home.
How Marshalls Compares to Other Retailers
Marshalls’ 30-day in-store return window is shorter than Best Buy return policy, which typically allows 15 days, but longer than many apparel retailers. The requirement to accept returns at the original store only differs from some competitors. If you shop at multiple discount retailers, TJ Maxx return policy is essentially identical since both are owned by TJX Companies and share the same system, meaning you can return Marshalls purchases at TJ Maxx stores and vice versa. Home Depot return policy and Lowe’s return policy offer 90-day windows for most items, reflecting the different nature of home improvement retail.
