What Products You Can Return at Safeway
Safeway covers a specific list of perishable items under its money-back guarantee: produce, meat, seafood, bakery, deli, and floral items. You can request a full refund if you are not 100% satisfied with the freshness or quality of any of these products.
Products that cannot be returned once accepted or picked up include baby formula, alcoholic beverages, and tobacco products. This restriction applies specifically to online orders through Safeway’s Drive Up & Go or Delivery services.
The sources do not specify return policies for non-perishable grocery items, household goods, or other merchandise sold at Safeway locations.
In-Store Returns and Receipt Requirements
For in-store purchases, you can bring items back to any Safeway location. You may bring your receipt, but it is not required to request a return or refund. If you do not have the receipt, simply bring the item to a store associate and explain that you are not satisfied with the freshness or quality.
The process is straightforward:
- Locate a store associate or go to the customer service desk
- Present the item and explain your concern about freshness or quality
- The item will be scanned at the register if possible, or the amount will be manually entered into the correct department
All refund transactions must include either the original receipt or a copy secured in the register till for reconciliation. If you want to keep your receipt, ask the cashier to make a copy.
Online Order Returns and the Seven-Day Window
For orders placed through Safeway’s online grocery service (Drive Up & Go or Delivery), you have seven days after delivery or pickup to request a refund or credit. You do not need to return the item to the store; instead, follow these steps:
- Notify the driver upon delivery of your order, or notify the store associate when you pick up your order
- Alternatively, contact Safeway within seven days by phone, web, mail, or chat
If you ordered through a third-party delivery service such as Instacart, UberEats, or DoorDash, you can either request a refund through that service using their Help section or app, or visit a Safeway store directly. You typically will not need to return the item when requesting through the third-party service.
Safeway’s satisfaction guarantee for online orders does not cover damage caused by improper use, storage, or accidents after delivery or pickup, or any ordinary wear and tear on durable goods. You may have certain rights under manufacturers’ warranties if applicable.
How Refunds Are Issued
Safeway issues refunds in several ways depending on the refund amount and how you paid:
| Refund Amount | Method | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Under $25 without receipt | Cash, gift card, or refunded to original tender | None |
| Under $9.99 | Any applicable method | None |
| $9.99 to $25 | Cash, gift card, or original tender | None |
| Over $25 | Refunded to original payment method or account credit | Manager approval required; signature required if returning to credit card; refund slip with customer signature, name, phone, and manager signature |
If you paid with a credit card, the refund will be credited back to that card. If you paid with a pin-based debit card, the refund will be issued as cash. For SNAP or Healthy Savings purchases, refunds must be credited back to the original tender. WIC refunds may be exchanged for the same product or another approved WIC item of the same or lesser value.
For online orders, Safeway will issue a credit to the payment method you used to purchase the item. You also have the option to receive a credit on your account that can be applied to your next online order.
The store manager reserves the right to use discretion regarding refunds, and all refunds over $25.00 require manager approval before processing.
Contacting Safeway for Returns and Refunds
If you cannot visit a store in person, you can request a refund by contacting Safeway through multiple channels:
- Phone: Call Safeway customer service
- Web: Submit a request through the Safeway website
- Mail: Send a written request to your local store or Safeway corporate office
- Chat: Use the online chat feature on Safeway.com
For produce specifically, if you purchased in-store and discovered quality issues at home, bring the items back to the store with your receipt if you have one, or contact Safeway using any of the above methods.
Comparing Safeway’s policy to Kroger return policy and Publix return policy shows that Safeway’s approach is more specific to perishable goods with a clearly defined seven-day window for online orders. Unlike some warehouse clubs such as Costco return policy and Sam’s Club return policy, Safeway does not offer blanket return guarantees on all merchandise; instead, it focuses on freshness guarantees for fresh foods.
