This appointment signals how seriously Gap Inc. is pursuing what CEO Richard Dickson calls “fashiontainment,” a strategy that positions Walmart and other major retailers as entertainment destinations alongside traditional shopping venues. Kaufman, a former Paramount executive, was brought in earlier this year to lead this transformation, overseeing gaming, music, sports, movies and brand collaborations.
Breton brings substantial experience in this space. During his six years at Walmart as head of partnerships, content and emerging experiences, he created Camp by Walmart, a digital entertainment initiative. He also spearheaded the retailer’s Roblox commerce launch and built out Walmart’s broader gaming strategy. His track record includes work with high-profile celebrities and brands including LeBron James and Elton John, and prior roles at companies like Condé Nast, Hearst and Squarespace.
What This Means for Shoppers
Gap Inc.’s hiring of Breton represents a broader industry trend where traditional clothing retailers are reimagining themselves as lifestyle and entertainment hubs. For consumers, this could mean more interactive shopping experiences, exclusive content tied to Gap Inc. brands and deeper integration between fashion, music and entertainment properties.
The company is clearly betting that younger shoppers increasingly expect entertainment value alongside their purchases. By investing in digital shopping innovations, Gap Inc. aims to make its brands relevant to culture in real time, rather than simply selling clothing seasonally.
Breton’s focus on gaming and emerging experiences particularly signals that Gap Inc. plans to reach customers in virtual spaces like Roblox and other metaverse platforms. This aligns with how younger consumers increasingly spend their time and how brands can reach them outside traditional retail settings.
Part of a Larger Pivot

Breton is not the only Walmart veteran now at Gap Inc. In May, the company hired Michael Francis as chief customer officer at Old Navy and head of marketing services across Gap Inc. Francis previously founded the marketing firm Fairview Associates and held leadership positions at Walmart, DreamWorks, J.C. Penney and Target.
Gap Inc. also recruited Lourdes Arocho, another Paramount executive, as senior vice president and head of licensing. Arocho focuses on brand extensions, partnerships and direct-to-retail opportunities that connect Gap Inc. to entertainment, sports and cultural moments.
These hires demonstrate a coordinated effort to transform how the company operates. Rather than simply selling products, Gap Inc. is building infrastructure to create and distribute entertainment content while maintaining retail relevance. The company views this strategy as essential to competing with both modern retail players and entertainment platforms.
Financial Performance and Future Direction
Gap Inc.’s first quarter showed mixed but encouraging results. Overall net sales rose 1 percent year over year to 3.5 billion dollars, with comparable sales up 2 percent. The Gap brand itself performed strongly with a 10 percent jump in net sales and comparable sales. Old Navy, the company’s largest division, saw net sales rise 1 percent to 2 billion dollars. However, Athleta experienced declines, with net sales falling 12 percent.
The company’s continued investment in executives like Breton suggests leadership believes the fashiontainment strategy can help reverse underperforming segments and maintain momentum in stronger brands. By creating more reasons for customers to engage beyond price and product quality, Gap Inc. hopes to build deeper brand loyalty and attract new demographics.
Shoppers can expect to see these changes gradually roll out across Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta properties. The emphasis on speed and cultural relevance means new collaborations, limited-edition drops tied to entertainment events and interactive digital experiences should become more common. Whether this strategy proves successful will become clearer as the company continues executing on its fashiontainment vision throughout 2024 and beyond.
