What Changed at Costco
The Kirkland Signature full-synthetic motor oil 5-quart two pack now sells for approximately $58, a dramatic jump from its previous price of around $30 just one year ago. Along with the price hike, Costco is limiting customers to purchasing only two boxes per week. Additionally, the retailer is restricting purchases of Mobil 1 full-synthetic motor oil 1-quart six packs, priced at about $44, to five units per membership.
These changes directly impact consumers who perform their own oil changes as a cost-saving measure. For many shoppers already dealing with elevated grocery prices and broader inflation concerns, the nearly doubled cost of motor oil represents yet another household expense pinch.
Why Oil Prices Are Climbing

The root cause of these increases lies in global crude oil supply disruptions. Synthetic motor oil production heavily depends on Group III base oils, which are refined from crude oil. The United States imports more than 40 percent of these specialty oils from the Middle East, a region currently experiencing significant supply disruptions tied to ongoing military tensions and attacks on critical infrastructure.
Brent crude oil prices have surged past $109 per barrel, up from below $72 in early July. A major Saudi Arabian oil pipeline recently sustained damage from an attack and will remain largely offline for several weeks. This pipeline is crucial because it allows Saudi Arabia to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint where Iranian military activity has repeatedly disrupted oil tanker movements.
The impact extends beyond motor oil. Gasoline prices have climbed to nearly $4.32 per gallon nationally, compared to $4.08 a month earlier and $3.18 a year ago. Diesel prices have been hit even harder, reaching record levels above $6 per gallon on average and continuing to rise. These fuel cost increases affect transportation and logistics across the economy.
Why Motor Oil Supply Is Tightening

Oil refineries face a critical economic calculation. When crude prices rise, refiners can generate significantly higher profits by converting oil into diesel and gasoline rather than motor oil. Since global demand for diesel and gasoline vastly exceeds demand for motor oil, and the daily volume is substantially higher, oil companies are prioritizing diesel and gasoline production. This market reality means less motor oil will be manufactured, contributing to scarcity and price pressures.
Costco’s purchase limits reflect an attempt to manage inventory and ensure broader customer access rather than allowing bulk buying that could deplete stock.
What This Means for Shoppers
Consumers who rely on DIY oil changes to save money should prepare for higher maintenance costs. The doubling of Kirkland motor oil prices eliminates much of the savings advantage these customers previously enjoyed at Costco.
Several questions remain unanswered about the broader retail landscape. Competitors like Walmart, Amazon, and AutoZone have not yet announced whether they will implement similar price increases or purchase restrictions on their motor oil selections. Their response in coming weeks will determine whether this is an industry-wide adjustment or unique to Costco’s pricing strategy.
For now, consumers should expect Costco members to face constraints on bulk motor oil purchasing and should budget accordingly for vehicle maintenance. The geopolitical tensions affecting Middle Eastern oil production show no signs of immediate resolution, suggesting these elevated prices may persist for the foreseeable future.
Shoppers with large vehicle fleets or businesses relying on regular oil changes should consider purchasing within the new limits before supplies become further constrained, though they should be mindful of the weekly purchase caps in place.
