The 30-Day Return Window and Eligible Items
Amazon’s standard return window is 30 days from the date of delivery. This applies to items sold directly by Amazon and to most items fulfilled by third-party sellers. The item must be in original or unused condition with all tags attached, hygiene seals intact, and original packaging preserved.
Before you buy, check the product detail page to confirm an item is returnable. After purchase, you can verify return eligibility in your Order History. If you need to return an item, go to Your Orders and click the “Return Items” button next to the product.
Non-Returnable Items and Exceptions
Some product categories cannot be returned under any circumstances:
- Digital books from Kindle Store that have not been read
- Digital textbooks, workbooks, and educational content that have not been downloaded
- Songs or albums purchased from the Digital Music Store
- Apple Brand products and Boost Infinite Brand products in new condition
- Amazon Haul items priced over $3
- Items purchased from Amazon Birthday, Wedding, or Baby Registries by anyone other than the registry owner
- Customized products made specifically for you
- Products listed as “Final Sale,” including trading card games and discounted items
- Amazon Pharmacy items
- Products that pose health and safety risks if returned
Select Amazon Renewed products also have return restrictions. Items in Acceptable, Good, or Excellent condition are non-returnable, as are all Premium condition items.
How to Return Items and Where to Drop Off
Amazon offers free returns at over 8,000 locations, including Whole Foods Market stores, Amazon Books, Amazon Go, and other retail partners. Most returns do not require boxing or labeling. You can complete a label-free, box-free return by selecting that option after initiating your return request and bringing a QR code to your chosen drop-off location.
For items shipped by Amazon, initiate the return through Your Orders. For items sold by third-party sellers who fulfill their own inventory, your return goes back to the seller, not Amazon. Third-party sellers must either provide a return address in the United States or offer a full refund without requiring the item to be returned.
If you do not drop off or complete a carrier pickup by the “return by date” shown in your return confirmation email or Order History, you may be charged a late fee of 20% of the item price for the first 30 days after the deadline, or 100% of the item price afterward.
Refund Timelines and Payment Methods
Amazon can take up to 30 days to receive and process your return after you ship it back. In some cases, refund processing may take longer. Once Amazon issues your refund, your financial institution may need additional time to credit the funds to your account.
Refunds are issued to the original payment method:
- Credit or debit card used for purchase
- Amazon.com Gift Card or Gift Card balance
- Prepaid credit card (depending on the card issuer)
If you already received a refund before returning the item, Amazon will charge you if the item is not sent back. If you have sent it back, Amazon will reverse the charge when processing your return. If Amazon needs more information about your return, you will be notified with instructions to contact Customer Service.
Return Fees and Special Charges
While most returns are free, Amazon may charge fees in specific situations. You may be charged if you select a non-free shipping or drop-off option, or if you have an unusually high return rate.
Heavy and bulky items may incur return shipping fees. An item is classified as heavy or bulky if the longest side when packed exceeds 59 inches or the girth exceeds 130 inches (girth = length + 2 times width plus height). Some bulky items require a home collection appointment with a specialty carrier team and may incur additional fees.
Condition-based fees apply if an item is damaged, missing parts, not in original condition, has tags removed, or shows obvious signs of use for reasons not caused by Amazon or the seller error. These fees are up to 50% of the item price for most items, or 100% of the item price for Amazon Luxury items.
Certain product types automatically incur fees when opened or used:
- Software and video games that are opened, activated, used, or missing parts
- Opened collectible cards, board games, table top games, or collectible variant figurines
Compared to Walmart return policy and Target return policy, Amazon’s free drop-off network is significantly larger. However, Costco return policy and Sam’s Club return policy offer more generous windows for members. Aldi return policy requires returns within 30 days as well.
Special Cases: Gifts, Third-Party Sellers, and Personal Data
To return a gift, use the “Return a Gift” option in Your Orders. You can return a gift without a receipt if you have a gift receipt. For items purchased from third-party sellers, submit a return request that the seller must review within two business days. If you do not receive a response, you can request an A-to-Z Guarantee Refund.
Before returning electronic devices like laptops, cameras, or other electronics, erase all personal information by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Amazon will not accept items with personal data intact. Do not include items from multiple orders in the same return box, as this can delay refund processing.
