What’s Happening at Kroger Stores
The expansion began in April with a full-scale Ukrop’s branded prepared-foods section at a Kroger Marketplace location in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Since then, smaller versions have opened in Charleston, West Virginia, and Yorktown, Virginia. An additional department is planned to open in early September at a Midlothian, Virginia Kroger, where it will replace an existing in-store Starbucks cafe.
Each Ukrop’s section offers a range of convenient options including grab-and-go baked goods, fresh salads, and prepared meals. This localized approach allows Kroger to capitalize on the strong recognition and loyalty the Ukrop’s brand enjoys in its regional market.
The Ukrop’s Brand and Its History

Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods operates as the bakery and prepared-foods division of the longtime regional Ukrop’s Super Markets chain. The family retained control of these operations after selling the main chain to Martin’s in 2009, which is part of Ahold-Delhaize USA’s Giant division. The bakery and prepared-foods business relaunched in 2010 under the Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods brand and has since become a regional supplier to multiple retailers.
The product lineup is extensive and includes cookies, cakes, pies, dinner rolls, salads, sides, and entrees. Many Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods items were already available in Kroger stores throughout the Richmond area and beyond, but the branded in-store departments represent a new, more prominent way to showcase these products.
Expanding Reach Beyond the Mid-Atlantic
Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods has been steadily expanding its distribution. Last year, the company introduced its grab-and-go grilled chicken to more than 500 Kroger-owned stores east of the Mississippi River. Additionally, signature items like Ukrop’s White House-brand dinner rolls, cinnamon crumb cake, and mini pies are now available in Kroger locations nationwide, making these regional favorites accessible to consumers across the country.
Why Grocers Are Investing in Prepared Foods
Kroger’s decision to expand prepared-foods offerings aligns with a significant shift in consumer behavior. Shoppers have increasingly turned to supermarkets for ready-to-eat meals, especially as consumers have become more cautious about dining out and have cut back on restaurant spending. This trend has made deli and prepared food sales among the strongest-performing categories for grocery retailers.
Industry data underscores this momentum. According to the 2026 Supermarket News Retailer Expectations Survey, 38 percent of retailers reported plans to expand their deli and prepared-foods offerings this year, while 66 percent said they intended to introduce more grab-and-go or prepacked foods. More than half of survey respondents identified deli and foodservice as the category they expected to be the most successful in 2026.
A Broader Industry Pattern

Kroger is not alone in this strategy. Other major grocers are making similar investments to capture growing demand for convenient food options. For example, H-E-B ramped up its rollout of upgraded grab-and-go prepared-foods displays this year under its Fresh Initiatives program. These moves demonstrate that supermarkets recognize prepared foods as a key area for growth and customer satisfaction.
What This Means for Shoppers
For consumers in the Mid-Atlantic region, the expanded Ukrop’s departments offer greater convenience and a familiar brand they may already trust and enjoy. The availability of regional favorites in a dedicated, prominently featured space makes it easier to discover and purchase these products during regular grocery trips.
More broadly, this expansion reflects the grocery industry’s commitment to meeting evolving shopping preferences. As more retailers invest in prepared-foods sections and grab-and-go options, shoppers can expect increasingly convenient and diverse meal solutions at their local supermarkets. Whether you’re looking for quick weeknight dinners, fresh-baked items, or salad options, the expansion of prepared-foods departments means more choices and accessibility across Kroger’s store network.
