How Target’s Price Adjustment Works
According to Target’s official policy, you can request a price match if you buy a qualifying item at Target and then find the identical item for less at Target.com, in Target stores, or with a Target Circle deal. The 14-day window starts from the date of purchase. Price matches may be requested at time of purchase or within 14 days after purchase.
The item must be the identical item, including brand name, size, weight, color, quantity, and model number. Target will not adjust the price if the lower price comes from a different Target store location. In-store price matches from other Target stores are excluded.
How to Request a Price Adjustment
For In-Store Purchases
You have two options to request a price adjustment for items bought in a Target store:
- Request a price match at checkout if you have found a lower price online or at Target before completing your purchase.
- Request a price adjustment after the fact at Guest Services in your local Target store.
You must bring proof of the current lower price. Target accepts only live, verifiable links shown on your mobile device. Screenshots or pictures cannot be accepted. If you already purchased the item, bring your original receipt, physical or digital, or your packing slip.
For Online or Target App Purchases
For Target.com or Target app orders, contact Target Guest Services to request a price match:
- Chat with Target online.
- Call Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869.
- Have your order number and item information ready.
- Have the current lower price ready from Target.com or the Target app.
Screenshots or pictures cannot be accepted as proof. Original receipts, physical or digital, or packing slips are required for price adjustments up to 14 days after purchase.
What Is Excluded From Price Adjustment
Target does not price-match certain categories of items. Understanding these exclusions will help you avoid wasting time on requests that will be denied.

Special Rules and Conditions
Target Circle Deals and Discounts
Target Circle members can access deals that apply automatically upon identifying yourself as a Target Circle member. Price matches are available for items with Target Circle deals, but proof requires member sign-in, sign-up, or mobile number entered at checkout. The 5% Target Circle Card discount still applies to price-matched items.
Manufacturer Coupons
Manufacturer coupons will be applied after a price match is made, but this applies to in-store purchases only. However, Target coupons, Target coupon policy restrictions, and gift card promotions cannot be combined with price match.
Location-Based Limitations
Price match of items sold by Target.com or prices through the Target app are not available in Alaska and Hawaii. When price matching with the Target app, the Target app must be showing the price of the current store location.
Target Plus Partner Items
Target Plus Partner items can qualify for a price match only if the lower price comes from the same Target Plus Partner on Target.com or with a Target Circle deal. Target items cannot be price-matched to Target Plus items and vice versa. For Target Plus purchases, you must contact Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869 to request a price match.
What Happens if Target Cannot Verify the Price
The price for an item must be listed and valid at the time of match. If Target is not able to verify the lower price, the company may decline the request. This means the online link you provide must be live and show the current price at the time Target reviews it. Target reserves the right to deny purchase and limit quantities per guest.
Receipt Requirements
Original receipts, physical or digital, or packing slips are required for price adjustments up to 14 days after purchase. If you lose your receipt, some sources indicate that you may be able to search your Purchase History for the item’s barcode and use it as proof, though the official Target policy page does not explicitly confirm this option.
Price Adjustments vs. Price Matching vs. Return Policy
Price adjustment is different from the Target price match policy, though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. A price adjustment refunds the difference after you have already purchased an item and discovered a lower price. A price match is when you request the lower price at the time of purchase or immediately after. Both fall under Target’s price match guarantee.
The Target return policy is separate and handles refunds for items you want to return within the return window. Price adjustments and returns serve different purposes.
Comparison with Other Retailers
Target’s 14-day price adjustment window is comparable to many major retailers. For reference, Walmart price adjustment policy offers similar terms, and Aldi price adjustment policy has its own set of rules. Each retailer has specific exclusions and proof requirements, so always check the individual store’s policy.
When to Submit Your Request
Submit your price adjustment request as soon as you find a lower price. You have up to 14 days from the date of purchase. There is no penalty for requesting early, and approvals are processed faster when you provide valid proof of the lower price on the first attempt. If Target needs additional time to verify the price, they will contact you through your order confirmation or receipt information.
