EBT Acceptance at Walgreens Stores
Walgreens official payment policy states that food stamps are accepted at select Walgreens stores. Because eligibility varies by location, you must contact your specific store to confirm whether it accepts SNAP/EBT before you shop. You can also use the USDA’s SNAP Retail Locator tool to verify if your nearby Walgreens participates in the program.
At stores that accept EBT, you can use your card at both regular checkout and self-checkout lanes (where available). When paying with EBT, notify the cashier so they can help you separate SNAP-eligible items from non-eligible purchases. Your SNAP balance will only cover qualifying food items, not other products.
Online EBT Shopping Through Instacart
Walgreens and Instacart announced in August 2024 that EBT SNAP payments are now accepted online at more than 7,500 Walgreens stores nationwide, including over 100 Duane Reade locations in New York. This service allows customers to purchase SNAP-eligible items for same-day delivery or pickup through the Instacart platform.
To order online with EBT, visit www.instacart.com/walgreens or select the Walgreens storefront in the Instacart app. Add your SNAP EBT card as your payment method in your Instacart profile, shop for eligible items, and at checkout select how much of your benefit to allocate to qualifying products. You can choose same-day delivery or in-store pickup depending on availability in your area.
Important: Your SNAP benefits cover only the eligible food items in your order, not Instacart’s delivery fees or service charges. Budget accordingly when placing your order.
What Items Qualify for SNAP at Walgreens
SNAP-eligible items follow federal rules and are the same at Walgreens as anywhere else. You can purchase:
- Dairy products including milk, cheese, and yogurt
- Grains such as bread and cereal
- Frozen foods like ice cream and frozen pizzas
- Snack foods including chips, popcorn, nuts, and candy
- Non-alcoholic beverages such as bottled water, energy drinks, soda, and juice
Items you cannot buy with SNAP at Walgreens include pet food, alcohol, tobacco products, medicines, vitamins, supplements, and hot prepared foods.
If you use a Walgreens coupon, it may reduce the final amount charged to your SNAP balance, making your benefits stretch further on eligible purchases.
What to Know Before You Shop
Walgreens acceptance of EBT varies by store location. Some stores may have limitations on which SNAP-eligible items they carry in stock or how they process EBT payments. Before your first trip, contact your local Walgreens to confirm:
- Whether the store accepts SNAP/EBT
- Which checkout options are available (self-checkout, staffed lanes, or both)
- Store store hours for your visit
For online shopping, Instacart availability depends on your location. If you choose Instacart delivery, confirm the service operates in your area before adding items to your cart. Pickup from participating Walgreens locations is available in more areas than same-day delivery.
Protecting Your EBT Card at Walgreens
Whether shopping in person or online, keep your SNAP benefits secure:
- At checkout, inspect card readers for skimming devices before inserting your EBT card. Gently shake the reader; if it moves or feels loose, do not use it.
- Change your EBT PIN monthly and never share it with anyone, including store staff or delivery personnel.
- Monitor your EBT balance regularly and report lost or stolen cards immediately to your state EBT customer service number.
- When ordering through Instacart, add your card details only to your official Instacart account, not through external links or messages.
If you use Instacart for delivery, a shopper will pick and pack your order but will not see your EBT card number. Payment processing happens entirely through the Instacart app or website.
Comparing Walgreens to Other Retailers
Walgreens’ national online EBT option through Instacart is relatively recent (launched August 2024). Other major retailers have different approaches. CVS EBT policy allows in-store SNAP purchases at select locations but does not yet offer nationwide online EBT checkout. Whole Foods EBT policy accepts SNAP in stores and online via Amazon Fresh. Aldi EBT policy accepts SNAP in-store at most locations but online EBT varies by region. If you prefer to shop at multiple retailers, confirm each store’s specific EBT rules before relying on them for your groceries.
